CELEBRITY READER-John Shattuck, Topsham Economic and Community Development Director

Celebrity Reader, John Shattuck is an avid reader! Here are some quotes he shared with us and suggestions for "battered Red Sox Fans."

You don't have to burn books to destroy a culture. Just get people to stop reading them. ~ Ray Bradbury

I have always imagined that Paradise will be a kind of library. ~ Jorge Luis Borges

John says,
"If the slow, painful demise of the Red Sox hopes are making you wretched, here are a few books that may provide some solace:

Summer of '49, By David Halberstam Riveting, detailed narrative of the pennant race between New York and Boston - and the rivalry between Joe Dimaggio, plus many other greats: Ted Williams, Ellis Kinder, Dom Dimaggio, Phil Rizzuto and Yogi Berra.

If I Never Get Back, By, Darryl Brock An engaging novel about the very early days of baseball: the Cincinnati Red Stockings in 1869. Be sure you specify the correct author, as there's book with the same title by Art Hill, which is about the Detroit Tigers.

Ring Around the Bases: The Complete Baseball Stories of Ring Lardner, ed. Matthew J. Bruccoli - Classic baseball writing from the marvelous Ring Lardner (1885-1933) - the most distinguished writer of baseball fiction from the first half of the 20th century. A feast!"

Catching Fire by Suzanne Collins
